7 Days Rongai Route
OVERVIEW
The Rongai Route is one of the less crowded routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the north side near the Kenyan border. It offers a unique perspective and is known for its relatively gentle gradient and beautiful wilderness.
Day 00: Arrival – Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi
Our driver will peak you at kilimanjaro airport, after loading the luggage into the car and then you will make your way to the Hotel in Moshi. Later you will meet with your team (Guide) who will do pre-trek briefing and gear check. After these,we will go through all the questions that you might have.
:Spend the night in a hotel to rest and prepare for the trek.
Day 1: Moshi to Rongai Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,650m)
– Drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate (approx. 3–4 hours).
– Start the trek through a pine forest.
– Arrive at Simba Camp, where you will spend the night.
Day 2: Simba Camp (2,650m) to Second Cave (3,450m)
Trek across moorlands with beautiful views of Kibo and the Eastern Icefields on the crater rim.
– Arrive at Second Cave, where you will camp for the night.
Day 3: Second Cave (3,450m) to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)
– Continue trekking through the moorlands and encounter more spectacular views.
– Reach Kikelewa Camp by mid-afternoon. Enjoy some rest and acclimatization.
Day 4:Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
– A shorter but steeper climb up to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the jagged peaks of Mawenzi.
– Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the surrounding area.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
– Cross the lunar-like desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo.
– Arrive at Kibo Hut, rest, and prepare for the summit push.
Day 6:Kibo Hut (4,700m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Begin the summit attempt in the early hours of the morning (usually around midnight 12am). After have a light breakfast you will start your 7-8hrs journey. When you ascend to the summit we will be dark so you need a headlamp /flashlight; We ascend very slowly slowly to the summit on steep and heavy scree up to Gilmans point on the crater rim.
This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At the Gilmans point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. From Gilmans point,you follow the crater rim to ascend to uhuru peak through the Stella Point. When you reach Uhuru peak you will spend some times and taking wonderful photos. There are spectacular views at every turn. Then we start descend back to the Kibo Huts when you arrive at the Huts you will have a rest, lunch then continue heading down to Horombo Huts.
